What a $100 Airbnb Looks Like Around the World
By Meredith Carey and Kyler Alvord
Airbnb has completely altered the way people experience new destinations, opening the doors to lesser-known towns and neighborhoods where hotels are scarce and allowing travelers to better immerse themselves in the everyday lives of the communities they visit. In today’s economy, travel is tough and listings aren’t always attainable, but that doesn’t mean that you should count a vacation out. For around $100 a night, you can rent out an amenity-filled treehouse in the jungles of Bali, or an entire riad outside of Marrakech. You can also stay at a picturesque island villa in Greece, or in a luxury apartment on the ocean cliffs of Portugal—and that’s just scratching the surface. Here are some of our favorite affordable Airbnb properties around the world, all of which offer an undeniably excellent value.
We've selected these listings based on Superhost status, ratings, amenities, location, decor, editor stays, and previous guest reviews. This gallery has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Vienna, Austria
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath
It’s not every day you find a dreamy apartment rental and think, “How is it that cheap?” This classy studio—which masterfully utilizes its unique floor plan to create a few separate, personality-filled areas—maintains an affordable price tag, making a trip to one of this year’s hottest destinations plenty attainable. The apartment has prime access to the city’s Old Town, home to historic sites and iconic Viennese coffee houses, and is convenient to public transportation and the Danube Canal.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1.5 baths
Open the exterior doors to this tropical loft home and your private paradise will quickly become one with its surroundings (literally—the enormous living room balcony was built around a tree). Despite sitting on the outskirts of Rio, everything about the listing is scenic, including the sun-drenched shower and airy kitchen. Plus the house sits at a high elevation, looking down on a valley and accessible by car or bus to local cuisine, beautiful beaches, and, of course, the city.
Sesimbra, Portugal
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath
Staying in a Portuguese village like Sesimbra is almost addictive, and this Airbnb doesn’t help: Here, there’s simply so much natural beauty to bask in that no length of stay will feel adequate. Of course it’s not the worst problem to have, especially when all downtime in this studio comes with up-close views of beachside cliffs, which you can gaze out on from a swinging chair on the balcony. If you ever get antsy, step outside of the cozy apartment and utilize the building’s private beach access, or get a taste of how locals do seafood at one of the town’s picturesque alleyway restaurants.
Costa da Caparica, Portugal
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath
Just a bus ride away from Lisbon, Costa da Caparica boasts expansive and uninterrupted shorelines—shores that are visible from each room of this affordable one-bedroom apartment, which manages to fit multiple sitting areas and a full kitchen into the space. The rental fosters deep relaxation thanks to its recent renovations, coastal aesthetic, and literal crashing waves in the background. On warm days, Costa da Caparica is the place Lisboners flock to for its golden beaches and lively bars.
Mexico City, Mexico
Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths
Surrounded by bars, restaurants, cafes, and green spaces, this two-bedroom apartment in Mexico City’s trendy Colonia Roma neighborhood fits five guests comfortably thanks to its queen-sized mattresses and sleeper sofa. Each room is well-lit, but it’s the floor-to-ceiling windows of the open kitchen, dining, and living room space that spark the greatest joy. Finishing touches on the apartment bring the whole space together, with built-in bookshelves, colorful wood paneling, and fun accessories each pulling some weight. Perhaps the best part of it all is that each bedroom has its own full bathroom, so there won’t be any shower line when the group is getting ready to hit the city.
Cairo, Egypt
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1.5 baths
Personality-wise, this Egyptian mini-house will always beat out its fierce Airbnb competition. The architecture, construction, tiling, decor—every aspect, really—just adds to the already-tranquil garden atmosphere that you’d struggle to find in other places. The structure’s exterior was crafted with ornately carved wood reclaimed from Upper Egypt and fixed with antique glass doors. The shared outdoor space comes with a wood-fired oven, lounge areas, dining areas, a sandbox, and a shallow fountain guests can cool off in. The entire property feels reminiscent of an earlier time, but beyond the garden walls are plenty of coffee shops, restaurants, and the Nile River.
Petulu, Bali, Indonesia
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath
Glamping has never looked more beautiful with this amenity-filled treehouse hidden in the jungles of Bali. The Wi-Fi equipped home comes with stellar nature views—from the cozy upstairs bedroom, the airy shower room, the hammocks suspended from the upper floor, and the private infinity pool built up against the unenclosed living room. Staying here means you’ll need some coordination if you want access to shops and restaurants (it’s about a 10-minute drive from the inland town of Ubud), but if scenery is your priority, it’s well worth the relatively remote location.
Paros, Greece
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath
Words can’t describe how absolutely stunning this countryside studio apartment is, situated in the hills of Greece’s Paros island. Attached to a traditional Greek villa with the Cyclades’ classic blue-and-white color scheme, the apartment feels straight out of Mamma Mia (with just as good of views!). Relax on the bedroom’s spacious balcony at sunset and look out over the seaside fishing village of Naousa, or enjoy a fresh-brewed coffee on the front patio in the morning. Your home base is only a five-minute drive to the center of town and 10 minutes from the island’s best beaches, so it’s pretty ideal all around.

Budapest, Hungary
Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 1 bath
Looking at pictures of this renovated rental, you’d never know that it’s just one unit in a large, century-old building on a quiet Hungarian street. Mere blocks from the heart of Budapest, it’s a delightful home base for a family of four or small friend group, offering two rooms on opposite ends of the apartment and various shades of blue all throughout the space. Each bedroom has a sleeping area and a sitting area—one of which is furnished with vintage cinema chairs by the window. Even better, the bathroom is bright and clean and the kitchen is fully functional for when you inevitably feel inspired to attempt homemade goulash.
Portland, Oregon
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath
Planning to spend most of your time out exploring Portland? This affordable Airbnb with a kitchenette will serve as the perfect home base, near the walkable shops and restaurants of northeast Portland and a short drive or Uber from the rest of the city. That's not to say you won't want to spend time in the tiny house itself, which sits just behind the hosts' home. You can whip up breakfast with eggs from the hosts' chicken coop, enjoy a coffee or cocktail on the front porch, or lounge on the bed in the relaxing, nearly all-white interiors.

Wootha, Australia
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath
Looking to get away from it all—and ready to capitalize on Australia's open borders after the pandemic halted Down Under travel? Head to this cozy, wood-paneled cabin just north of Brisbane. While it's on a compound with a bunch of other Airbnbs (like this tiny house), it's surrounded by rainforest, giving it some serious privacy. During your stay, you can cook up meals in the well-equipped kitchen (breakfast goodies are provided), relax in front of the wood-burning fireplace, bird-watch from the patio, or wander down to the shared pool.

Cape Town, South Africa
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1.5 baths
Planning a beach break? It doesn't get much closer to the surf and sand than this one-bedroom home just steps from Cape Town's low-key Llandudno Beach. A 70-year-old cottage, it is minimalist in design but has all of the expected amenities, like a well-equipped kitchen, living area, and a private backyard with a grill and deck for evening braais. If you'd like to swap walks on the sand for walks down Long Street, know that Cape Town's buzzy Central Business District is about a 30-minute drive. (And Constantia's wineries are even closer, between 15 and 20 minutes away.)
Istanbul, Turkey
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath
While this Istanbul Airbnb is technically a studio, there is plenty of space to move around—and clearly defined spaces thanks to some expert use of plants and sheer dividers. There's a bedroom area, a living room with a loveseat and TV, plus a kitchenette (with two burners and no oven) and tucked away dining area. But don't plan to stay in much: the apartment, located on the city's European side, is within walking distance of tons of shopping districts like Cukurcuma, known for its vintage shopping, and the new Galataport district that's made Istanbul all the more exciting.
Arecibo, Puerto Rico
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath
This spot an hour west of San Juan really puts the glam in glamping. Sure, it's a shipping container turned into an Airbnb guesthouse—but it's one of the most luxe we've seen, with a double bed, kitchenette, and full bathroom with a rain shower. But the exterior is where you'll really want to play, with a semi-covered deck for meals, an outdoor living room in the grass, and hammocks to lounge after a day at the nearby beach. (Plus, past guests rave about host Francis, who will stop by with fresh coconuts and more during your stay.)
Nairobi, Kenya
Bed & bath: 1 bedroom, 1 bath
If you're looking to add a buffer to your Kenyan safari trip or for a respite from the bustle of Nairobi, this light-filled home about an hour from the capital offers an option for both. The one-bedroom home has super-high ceilings and is mostly filled with white furniture, with pops of color throughout the living room, bedroom, spacious kitchen, and bathroom, which features a stained glass window. While the home is surrounded by trees and feels quite secluded, it's within walking distance of the Kitengela Hot Glass studio, where you can watch expert glassblowers do their thing with recycled glass.

You'll have access to an outdoor pool, a massage room, a sauna, a gym, public terraces for residents, and a grill area. As for the apartment, it's a one bedroom with a sweeping view of the city from its terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows, a large kitchen with an even larger dining table, desk area, and more.
Oumnass, Morocco
Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 2 baths
One of the most luxurious homes on this list, this two-bedroom home less than 30 minutes outside of Marrakech offers guests access to a large pool, private gardens, indoor-outdoor living spaces, and more. It's also family friendly, with a travel crib, high chair, and baby bath available on request. Because of the home's more rural location, the host, Ghizlane, can help you arrange transport from the city and help coordinate any day trips to the surrounding area.

Modica, Italy
Bed & bath: 2 bedrooms, 1.5 baths
Built in Modica's Old Town, this Sicilian apartment is full of charm, like the original 18th century stone floors. That said, there are plenty of modern amenities on hand, including a washer/dryer, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. It also has its own private cobble-stoned backyard, large living spaces with impossibly high ceilings, and two bedrooms—one with a single bed, the other with a double. Looking to build out an entire itinerary in the region? Traveler editor Erin Florio has just the thing, complete with a stop in Modica if you want to make this Airbnb your home base.
